Aboriginal deaths in Custody & High Incarceration Rates

While Aboriginal deaths in custody remains a core area of advocacy for the Aboriginal Rights Coalition we respect the work of Uncle Ray Jackson in establishing the Aboriginal Social Justice Alliance which has outlined deaths in custody as its core area of social justice work and provided support of sister organisation
Nationally Aboriginal people continue to suffer:
• High incarceration rates with 27% inmates Aboriginal while only 2.5% of the population. For youth in detention centres it rises to 60%.
• Aboriginal deaths in custody continues at an alarming rate, with more than 400 deaths between 1980-2012.
